Our Research

Research in our Photomedicine Laboratory is focused on the therapeutic effects of monochromatic light in the range of 400 nm to 1000 nm wavelength. Earlier studies were directed at the use of red and near infrared light, emitted by lasers and other monochromatic light sources, to stimulate tissue repair in experimental animal models of soft tissue injury and clinical cases of chronic ulcers that failed to respond to other forms of treatment. More recently, as a follow up to our pioneering reports in 2007 and 2008 and our subsequent studies, which indicate that 470 nm light is antimicrobial to two strains of Salmonella enterica, our team has focused on the mechanism underlying the antimicrobial effects of blue lightUnderstanding and identifying the mechanisms for the antimicrobial effect of blue light will advance this line of research to translational discoveries, and foster the development of a therapeutic protocol for treating human cases of bacterial infections and environmental sterilization.
